Joseph sits at the foot of the Wallowa Mountains, a range so dramatic it's called "Oregon's Little Switzerland." The peaks rise over 9,000 feet directly above town, their glacial cirques and alpine lakes creating some of the most stunning mountain scenery in the American West.
The town itself has become a bronze sculpture mecca. Foundries like Valley Bronze create works shipped worldwide, while Main Street serves as an outdoor gallery with monumental bronzes displayed on nearly every corner. This unlikely combination of Western heritage and fine art gives Joseph a unique character.
Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce was born in the Wallowa Valley, and the town's connection to this history is respectfully preserved. The Wallowa Band Nez Perce Trail Interpretive Center tells the story of the Nez Perce and their forced removal from their homeland.
