The Heart of the San Juan Islands
★ NomineeNominee status indicates a town under consideration for certification. Certified towns have completed our full evaluation process and meet all criteria.
Friday Harbor is the only incorporated town in the San Juan Islands, an archipelago of 172 named islands scattered across the waters between Seattle and Vancouver, B.C. This is the heart of the Pacific Northwest's island culture—a place where kayakers share the waters with orcas, and time moves to the rhythm of ferry schedules.
The town wraps around a harbor filled with sailboats and fishing vessels. Front Street's boutiques, galleries, and restaurants overlook the docks, while residential streets climb the hillside through madrona trees and flowering gardens. Everything feels slightly slower here, slightly gentler—island time is real.
Whale watching is the signature experience, with resident orca pods frequently spotted from both boat tours and shore. The Whale Museum chronicles the islands' relationship with these magnificent creatures, while Lime Kiln Point State Park offers the best land-based whale watching in North America.
