Saugatuck has been drawing artists since the 1890s, when painters from the Art Institute of Chicago established a summer colony along its dune-lined shores. Today this tiny resort town on Lake Michigan remains one of the Midwest's most vibrant art communities, with over 20 galleries lining its compact downtown.
The town straddles the Kalamazoo River where it meets Lake Michigan, creating a landscape of dramatic dunes, pristine beaches, and harbor-side boardwalks. Oval Beach has been named one of America's most beautiful, while the chain ferry across the river connects to Saugatuck Dunes State Park and its 2.5 miles of undeveloped coastline.
Beyond art and beaches, Saugatuck offers boutique shopping, farm-to-table dining, and a welcoming atmosphere that has made it a popular destination for all visitors.
